John Deere & Hitachi Excavator Parts Compatibility: What You Need to Know

If you run both John Deere and Hitachi excavators, there's a good chance you've noticed how similar many of their parts look. That's no coincidence — and understanding why can save you money when sourcing used and rebuilt components.

Why John Deere and Hitachi parts often overlap

For decades, John Deere and Hitachi built excavators together through a long-standing manufacturing partnership. As a result, many John Deere excavators share their base machine, hydraulics and major components with the equivalent Hitachi model. For buyers, this means a component from one brand can sometimes serve as a cost-effective solution for the other — but only when the model generation and part numbers line up.

Model generations matter more than model names

An excavator's series tells you which generation you're dealing with, and generations rarely mix parts freely:

  • Hitachi: the older EX series gave way to the modern ZX (Zaxis) series. Within these you'll see suffixes like -2, -3, -5 and -6 that mark generational updates.

  • John Deere: the LC and GLC series designate the machine's configuration and generation.

A part built for an EX-2 machine won't necessarily fit an EX-3, even though the base model number looks the same.

Watch the serial-number breaks

Manufacturers frequently change a component partway through a model's production run. Two machines with the identical model badge can therefore need two different part numbers depending on their serial number. Always match the serial range, not just the model.

Don't guess — confirm the fit

Because of these generational and serial-break differences, the safest approach is always to verify compatibility against the actual part number and serial range before buying. A specialist who dismantles both brands can cross-reference this quickly.

How we help

At Flemings Equipment we dismantle and rebuild both John Deere and Hitachi excavators in-house, across the Hitachi EX and ZX ranges and the John Deere LC and GLC series. That means we can confirm exactly which used or rebuilt component fits your machine — and often offer a compatible cross-brand option at a better price. Send us your model and serial number and we'll confirm the right part before it ships.
